Whatever sport or activity you do, or would like to do, Pilates will improve it. Why?
Because Pilates teaches you how to move correctly, We take away momentum and isolate the muscle we want to work with. Strengthening the muscle, at the same time as lengthening to create more mobility. This is also an excellent way to work if you are carrying an injury, we can work around it.
Pilates for Golfers
If golf is your thing, regardless at your ability, Pilates can help you enjoy what you love, and help you improve your range of movement, your power, which hopefully will make you a better golfer
What happens to your body when playing golf.....
Back & spine - The general position required to play golf means you spend hours hunched over your club, along with the rotational movement you do as you swing the club can cause serious back pain. A lot of people experience lower back pain, but it is also common to feel shooting, stabbing pains between your shoulder blades.
A lot of the power in the swing comes from rotation and extension through the spine. I recommend a mixture of strength and flexibility training especially in the core and spine. This will result in a better range of motion. A strong core will keep the spine supported, this is essential, especially when practicing a sport that repeats a single movement, and puts pressure and stress on your body.
Knees - When you stabilise the rotation of the hip at the beginning of a swing, you will put extra stress and strain on your knee. The stabilising muscles for your knees are your glutes. Pilates is a very effective way to isolate and strengthen these muscles, without any further damage to joints.
Shoulder - Golfers often suffer with problems in their rotator cuffs. The rotator cuffs are the four stabilising muscles located in each shoulder. Building up strong rotator cuff muscles is so important to stay injury free, and to stabilise and mobilise the shoulders. You will also notice improved range of movement, as pilates strengthens and lengthens the muscles. Loosening and opening up tightness that we often experience through the chest, shoulders and upper back, helping you get a smoother, pain free swing..
When one practices a sport like golf, which makes one side of the body develop different to the other side it is common to suffer from a posture-based imbalance, this can lead to further injuries if not addressed.
